| CERAMIC STUDIO
MEMBERSHIP Non-instructional use of the ceramic studio and equipment. Membership includes glazes, firing, and studio access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except during class time. New members must make an appointment with the studio manager (858) 616-0512 (pager) for a tour of the facilities and guidelines for studio use. Studio membership fees are not prorated; late enrollees are required to pay the full fee.

| BEGINNING CERAMICS I Develop your creativity through the exploration of clay! This survey course will offer the person without a background in ceramics or art the opportunity to gain a basic foundation in form, function, and aesthetics. Students will learn to make simple forms on the potter's wheel and become acquainted with the working properties of clay. Elementary techniques of glaze application will be explored. Beginner's tools and 25 lbs of clay are included in the course fee. Wear old clothing. Bring a sponge and a combination lock to the first class meeting. 6 weeks instruction, 2 weeks studio, Crafts Center Room 107. |

| BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE
CERAMICS This course is designed for students who have mastered the simple cylinder and are ready to move on to more complex forms. Students will be encouraged to attempt more challenging and larger forms, and will gain a solid grounding in throwing theory and technique. Glazing, kiln-loading, and decorating demonstrations will generate a deeper understanding of the complete ceramic process. | FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE This course will introduce the student to basic techniques in modeling the human figure. We will sculpt the human figure by studying anatomy. The first assignment will involve a part of the body that is assigned by the instructor. The second assignment will be to study a live model. Medium: clay to be fired. Please bring the following supplies to the first class: 15x15 plywood board, 12"-14" PVC pipe with threaded flange (3/4"-1" diameter), screws to connect flange to board, clay sculpture tools, large plastic garbage bag, masking tape, and spray bottle. | BEG/INT WHEEL THROWING During the summer, why don't you develop your throwing technique? This class focuses on wheel throwing. Instructions will be given step by step. Set your own goals and you will explore the next steps of wheel throwing. This class is a beginning class for both Japanese and English speakers. Bring a sponge and a combination lock. | HANDBUILDING & WHEEL THROWING FOR JAPANESE AND ENGLISH SPEAKERS Class will focus on Japanese pottery techniques utilizing the hand wheel/electric wheel. Students will explore traditional tea ceremony wares as well as learn to create multiple set pieces. Students are introduced to spiral wedgng "kikuneri," coiling & pinch pot "tebineri," throwing off the hump "baibiki," as well as refining studio skills and learning to use Japanese pottery tools. By combining the two techniques, various functional ware will be taught step-by-step along with an introduction to glazes. You can develop both skill and creativity in these artistic activities while having fun. The class will be taught in both English and Japanese. | CERAMIC GLAZES This course will focus on high fire (cone 10) glaze materials, glaze preparation, application and firing. This class will provide an opportunity to explore ceramic glazing with the goal of producing consistent, high quality glazes to fulfill practical and aesthetic functions. This will be a general class suitable for both beginners and advanced students. FAMILY CLAY DAY WORKSHOP Do what you've always wanted to do...Play with Clay! Add your kids to the mix for a fun and creative day exploring handbuilding. A creative opportunity to bond with your child or a family member. Children 8-17 years only, please. Clay and tools will be provided. CARVING CLAY WORKSHOP Ed Thompson will demonstrate his carving process, starting from the design and layout of the pattern, through a sequence of carving steps that lead to a highly finished piece. Ed will demonstrate how he makes his tools, and provide tools so that participants can follow alongside. Please bring trimmed leatherhard pieces to carve. RAKU WORKSHOP
The enjoyment of clay and form, as a ceramic process transforms both the pot and the potter. This workshop will focus on traditional American Raku, artistic and technical information. Low failure rates, safety, glaze techniques and basic formulas will be covered. This class should be considered a learning experience so that you can learn to fire your own Raku kiln with supervision later if you wish. Please bring only 4 or 5 bisque ware pieces and glazing brushes. If there is time more pieces will be fired. Prerequisite: Beginning Ceramics or equivalent. 1 meeting.
