JEWELRY STUDIO MEMBERSHIP

Non-instructional use of Crafts Center jewelry studio and equipment (when classes are not in session) and studio personnel are present. New members: Please make an appointment with the jewelry technician for facility tour and membership guidelines. Studio membership fees are not prorated; late enrollees are required to pay full fee. If you are taking a jewelry class concurrently, studio membership will be half the fee. Hours will be posted: approximately 12pm - 6pm Monday & Tuesday, 9am - 6pm on Wednesday, 3pm - 6pm on Thursday, 2pm - 5pm on Friday and Saturday 10am - 5pm (except when a class or workshop is being held.) JEWELRY MAKING

Learn the art of lost wax casting, basic fabrication skills for creating jewelry designs in silver, gold or non-precious metals. Emphasis will be on developing design skills, specific to jewelry, and on becoming familiar with each stage of the fabricating and casting process. Students will learn to use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as torches and casting equipment. All tools provided. Saw blades, solder and silver will be available for purchase in class. Students will have the opportunity to complete several pieces of jewelry during the course. 9 weeks, Crafts Center Jewelry Studio, Room 106.

PRIVATE CLASSES

Private jewelry making classes will be set up to run concurrently with the 9 week UCSD quarter, but will be held 4 hours per day, once a week for a total of 36 hours of instruction. In this program, the student will learn to fabricate jewelry in precious metals, that is, create their own stock and fashion it by forming, cutting, filing and polishing. Lost wax casting will also be covered, exploring hard wax carving techniques and holding tolerances. This program will give the student a large variety of hands-on experiences creating one-of-a-kind jewelry, as well as repairing and refurbishing gold and silver jewelry. BEGINNING STONE SETTING JEWELRY

Students will learn to fabricate and set simple stone mountings in gold and silver. Many methods of jewelry fabrication will be introduced. Sawing, drilling, roller-printing, soldering, polishing, and casting equipment will be demonstrated as needed. Special attention is given to learning the techniques necessary to safely set stones into bezels, tubes, and filagee-wire mountings. Properties and cost of various gemstones will be discussed at the first meeting. Please note, this class does not include diamond setting or production-setting of purchased mountings. INTERMEDIATE STONE SETTING JEWELRY



In this class, students who have acquired some basic jewelry skills can work on more advanced individual projects. Short cuts, bench tricks and additional carving and fabrication techniques will be presented as needed. Emphasis will be on finishing projects and developing confidence in torch and tool use. RETICULATED SILVER CLASS

Reticulation is a simple process using a torch to develop a textured surface on silver sheet. The surface is permanent, organic, or topographical in appearance. This sheet is cut, soldered and fused to form a base for rings, bracelets and earrings. Silver scrap, wires and tubes can be fused to the reticulated surface to add additional detail and act as a base in which to set stones.
